# AI Music on Streaming: Landscape Brief Research gathered 18 Aug 2026 to ground the PRD. Everything below is sourced; links at the end. --- ## 1. What Spotify actually shipped (11 Aug 2026) An **AI Persona badge**, appearing from mid-September. **Scope, and this is the crucial detail:** the badge is about the artist's public identity, not about how the music was made. Spotify says so explicitly. A human artist who used AI heavily in production does not get the badge. A fully AI-generated identity does. How the music was made is covered by two separate, older features: **AI Credits** (artists disclose AI use in creation, tens of thousands submitted daily) and **SongDNA** (contributor and sampling context, launched March 2026). **How a profile gets badged** - Artists can self-disclose from 11 Aug via Spotify for Artists - Spotify will not rely on self-disclosure alone. Its review team proactively flags profiles whose name and imagery appear to be photorealistic AI identities - Rollout starts with artists above defined audience thresholds - Badged artists are notified and can self-disclose or appeal - Listener reporting of suspected AI Personas is promised "in the coming months" **Where the badge appears** Artist profile banner and About section, search results, and track rows in playlists. Tapping it reveals whether the artist self-disclosed or Spotify made the determination. **The default** AI Personas are excluded from editorial, algorithmic, and personalized recommendations. Exception: if a listener follows an AI Persona, that music can still surface. **What Spotify did NOT ship** - Any listener-facing toggle or filter - Any filtering of AI-*assisted* music - Any change to search or library behaviour (badge appears, but nothing is hidden or blocked) - Demonetisation of AI tracks **Wider 2026 context.** Spotify has framed Artist Identity & Trust as a top priority this year: Verified by Spotify (Apr 2026, human-artist verification), AI Credits, SongDNA, Artist Profile Protection, and Artist Details. The AI Persona badge is the latest piece, not a standalone response. --- ## 2. What competitors already do ### Deezer, furthest ahead on detection - First platform to detect and tag AI music at platform level, early 2025 - Over 13.4M AI tracks tagged - Second-generation detector released June 2026, claimed 99.8% accuracy - Publishes a free public AI music detector that works across Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, and YouTube Music - **Has a user-facing filter toggle** - Removes tagged tracks from algorithmic recommendations and editorial playlists - Excludes fraudulent AI streams from royalty calculations ### Tidal, furthest ahead on consequences - Launched a user AI filter as a toggle, July 2026. When switched off, AI-tagged tracks become **unplayable** and disappear from recommendations - From 15 July 2026, tracks detected as 100% AI-generated **stop earning royalties**. First major service to go beyond labelling into demonetisation ### Bandcamp Also drew a public line against fully AI-generated content. ### Industry standard forming 10 July 2026: RIAA and IFPI, joined by the Recording Academy, SAG-AFTRA, A2IM, IMPALA, WIN, and the Human Artistry Campaign, launched a voluntary cross-platform labelling program with two tags: **AI Generated** (entirely or primarily AI, including tracks whose lead vocals or key instrumentals are AI-generated) and **AI Assisted** (substantially human-created, AI used for some elements). No streaming service has formally committed to displaying the labels yet. That two-tier split matters enormously for this spec. It is the difference between filtering slop and burying working musicians. --- ## 3. Scale of the problem - **44%** of all newly uploaded tracks on Deezer are AI-generated, roughly **75,000 per day** (Deezer, April 2026) - AI tracks account for only **1-3% of total streams** on Deezer - **85%** of those AI streams are detected as fraudulent and demonetised The gap between 44% of uploads and 1-3% of streams is the whole story: this is primarily a catalogue-pollution and fraud problem, not yet a listening problem. Which sets a realistic ceiling on how much a filter can improve anyone's day. --- ## 4. Demand evidence **Deezer / Ipsos survey, Nov 2025** - **45%** of music streaming users say they would like to filter out 100% AI-generated music - **80%** believe AI music should be labelled - **97%** could not distinguish AI tracks from human-made ones unaided **From my own pipeline (July 2026 data, 628 records)** - AI content was the second-highest scoring cluster and the only genuinely new problem in the set - 5 of the top 25 r/truespotify posts in a month, roughly 1,070 combined upvotes - Community members building their own AI filters, which is unmet demand you can observe rather than infer - Cluster sentiment 10 complaining to 3 praising, the cleanest signal in the data Worth stating plainly: my data is from mid-July, Spotify announced on 11 August. That is not prediction. Spotify had this in flight for months and shipped a related feature, Verified by Spotify, back in April. What it does show is that the signal was real and detectable from public feedback before the announcement. --- ## 5. The gap this PRD addresses Spotify now tells you **who** is artificial. It does not let you decide **what you hear**. | | Spotify (Sept 2026) | Deezer | Tidal | This proposal | |---|---|---|---|---| | Labels AI content | Identity only | Track level | Track level | Uses existing labels | | User toggle | No | Yes | Yes | Yes | | Blocks playback | No | No | Yes | No, filters only | | Demonetises | No | Partial | Yes | Out of scope | Three specific gaps: 1. **No listener control.** Spotify decides the default. A listener who wants AI content fully out of search and library has no lever. 2. **The badge is identity, not output.** A fully AI-generated track released under a human or ambiguous artist identity carries no badge, so it is not excluded from anything. 3. **Recommendations only.** Search and library are untouched. --- ## 6. The tension to design around A filter costs Spotify money. AI tracks are cheap catalogue with low or no royalty obligations. Making them easier to remove reduces margin per stream. So the honest framing is not "Spotify has not thought of this." It is: a filter must earn more in retention and trust than it gives up in catalogue economics, and Spotify has so far chosen the cheaper option of disclosure plus a default. Two facts cut against the pessimistic read. AI is only 1-3% of streams, so the revenue at risk is small. And 85% of AI streams on Deezer are fraudulent, which means much of that revenue is not legitimately earned anyway. --- ## 7. What this constrains in the spec - **Filter on "AI Generated" only, never "AI Assisted."** Most working musicians use AI somewhere in production. A coarse filter buries them. This is the single most important design decision here. - **Do not build user-applied tags.** Crowdsourced labelling is a brigading vector and the cost of a false positive lands on a real artist's income. Spotify's own reporting flow, feeding a review queue with an appeals process, is the right model. User reports as a signal, never as a live label. - **Filter, do not block.** Tidal makes tracks unplayable. That breaks shared playlists and links from outside the app. Hiding from discovery surfaces achieves the same goal with less collateral damage. - **Depends on label coverage.** The toggle is only as good as the underlying tagging, which currently covers photorealistic AI identities above audience thresholds. Coverage is a genuine risk to call out, not to hide. --- ## Sources - [Spotify Newsroom: Introducing a New Label for AI-Generated Artist Identities](https://newsroom.spotify.com/2026-08-11/ai-persona-badges-transparency/) - [TechCrunch: Spotify will label 'AI Persona' profiles and exclude their music from recommendations](https://techcrunch.com/2026/08/11/spotify-will-label-ai-persona-profiles-and-exclude-their-music-from-recommendations/) - [Variety: Spotify Strikes Back Against AI Artists with 'AI Persona' Label](https://variety.com/2026/music/news/spotify-strikes-back-against-ai-artists-ai-persona-label-1236831790/) - [Music Ally: Spotify will label AI-generated artists with an 'AI Persona' badge](https://musically.com/2026/08/11/spotify-ai-personas-music-artists/) - [TechCrunch: TIDAL cracks down on AI music by cutting off monetization](https://techcrunch.com/2026/06/29/tidal-cracks-down-on-ai-music-by-cutting-off-monetization/) - [TechTimes: TIDAL Royalty Ban on AI Music Now Live](https://www.techtimes.com/articles/320638/20260715/tidal-royalty-ban-ai-music-now-live-fraud-still-costs-artists-2-billion.htm) - [Forbes: With Tidal's New AI Music Policy, AI Detection Tech Becomes Vital](https://www.forbes.com/sites/billrosenblatt/2026/07/06/with-tidals-new-ai-music-policy-ai-detection-tech-becomes-vital/) - [Deezer Newsroom: AI-generated tracks represent 44% of new uploaded music](https://newsroom-deezer.com/2026/04/ai-generated-tracks-represent-44-of-new-uploaded-music/) - [Deezer Newsroom: Deezer and Ipsos study, AI fools 97% of listeners](https://newsroom-deezer.com/2025/11/deezer-ipsos-survey-ai-music/) - [AlternativeTo: Deezer launched a free AI music detector for all major streaming platforms](https://alternativeto.net/news/2026/6/deezer-just-launched-a-free-ai-music-detector-for-all-major-streaming-platforms/) - [Ecoustics: AI Music Labels Are Coming to Streaming, But Will They Actually Work?](https://www.ecoustics.com/news/ai-music-labeling-2026/)
